Nostalgia for the Future

Are you excited for your future?

Welcome to today’s letter.

After reading this you should have a clear vision for your future that gets you excited for life.

Let’s dive in.

You should always feel like your best days are ahead of you.

AKA "nostalgia for the future".

But what exactly is nostalgia for the future?

And how do we develop it?

Why It Matters

Morning alarm goes off.

You’re eyes dart open and instantly you feel a sense of dread for the day ahead so you press snooze and ignore reality for a little bit longer.

Alarm goes off again.

This time you begrudgingly drag yourself out of bed - thinking to yourself how will I ever do this for the next 30 years?

Go to work.

When you get home you feel drained.

You’re frustrated that you spent all day working on something you have no interest in, just so you can get underpaid for all your hard work.

By the time you get home you have just enough time to walk the dog, eat a shitty dinner, and sit on the couch watching tv until as late as possible - distracting yourself from the fact that tomorrow will be another miserable day.

The sad reality is that some version of this is how a large percent of people actually live their lives.

“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”

Henry David Thoreau

How We Avoid This Fate

We need to develop a vision for our ideal future.

A strong vision is comprised of two main things:

  1. an imagined reality that creates excitement about what our life could be

  2. a plan that helps us start taking action towards building that life (because a vision without action is just a dream)

From there, this becomes a positive feedback loop of continued self growth.

Let’s quickly take a look at each of these further.

Step 1: Getting Excited For Life

You need to create an exciting imagined reality to align yourself with.

If you aren’t excited for life, it means you aren’t enjoying what you spend most of your time doing (which is usually related to how you make a living).

So ask yourself:

  • What are you interested in?

  • What are you good at?

  • What skills do you already have?

  • What hobbies do you have?

  • What communities are you a part of?

  • What do you spend your free time doing?

  • What type of videos and content do you watch the most?

  • What do you find yourself day dreaming about most often?

  • If you could trade places with anyone for the day, who would it be?

Questions such as this should quickly help you hone in on what you enjoy most about in life.

From there, use google to do research to find people who are doing the things you find most interesting AND are making an income from it.Make a list of 5 - 10 quality people.

Study them, read about their life history. You’ll soon realize they are regular people like me and you who decided to push themselves to be the best version of themselves they could.

You’ll see that doubt, fear, and setbacks are normal. Everyone faces these things.

Nobody with an impressive character had an “easy path”.

Some just paint a vision for the future that gets them so inspired they are able to push past where others quit.

Courage isn’t acting WITHOUT fear. It’s acting DESPITE of fear.

Pull out a pen and piece of paper then write about a future you feel pulled to.

Where do you want to be in 3 years?

Where do you want to be in 1 year?

Where do you want to be in 6 months?

Use your research, combined with your imagination, and have fun with this.

Design a future that if it were your current reality you would feel excited to wake up to everyday.

It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve been through, your age, sex, or color.

ANYONE can start now to create a tomorrow they enjoy more than today.

"He who has a 'why' to live can bear or deal with almost any how.”

Friedrich Nietzsche

Step 2: Creating A Plan

You have a vision for your ideal future.

But how do you now turn your current life in your imagined life?

You need a big picture plan.

Because a plan brings clarity.

And without clarity you will feel overwhelmed which means you will never get started.

Break down your future planning into milestones you will hit on your way to your vision.

What major steps will need to be reached in your life on your way to your ideal future.

But even more than a plan, you need what we call in business “standard operating procedures”.

You need to turn your plan into direct actions that you will take to achieve that plan.

Break your plan into what you need to do on a:

  • monthly

  • weekly

  • daily basis

Putting It All Together

Start with your ideal future from step 1.

Build a long term, end to end roadmap showing where you currently are, where you want to get to, and all the milestones you will need to hit. Also include timelines for each.

Break those milestones into Standard Operating Procedures (specific actions) for your Month, Week, and Day.

Stay consistent.

Reevaluate upon hitting or missing each milestone.

Learn, refine, and keep going.

You’re ideal future is closer than you think.

Thanks for reading today’s letter - I’ve got prospecting and client work to get into so unfortunately I’m gonna have to cut it shorter than I wanted.

I’ve got a lot more I could say about designing and actualizing your ideal future so I’ll write more on it in the future.

For now, if you’re interested in talking 1-on-1 with me so you can get tailored guidance for building your ideal life, message me the word “vision” on instagram (link to my profile below).

Cheers,

Hunter
