How to Live a Life of Freedom
Self Actualization, Entrepreneurship, and Spirituality
What’s going on?
Currently checking in from Scottsdale, Arizona.
If you have any recommendations for things to do, places to eat, etc… shoot me a DM on instagram and let me know.
Today we are talking about living a life of freedom.
Let’s dive in.
Personal Freedom
Over the weekend I was in the desert thinking about what it means to truly be “free”.
Everyone always talks about achieving personal freedom, but what exactly is that?
And how do we achieve it?
Well, we can start by asking who the most free individuals in our society are?
The answer to that, in my opinion, is business owners.
I’ve spoken with hundreds of business owners over the years, making anywhere from $500k per year to over $200M per year, and after reflecting on their stories (as well as my own experiences)… here’s what I came up with.
There’s two key components to unlocking your freedom:
Entrepreneurship to become free from material needs and worries
Spirituality to become free from mental and emotional suffering
Let’s break it down…
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
In 1943 American Psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote a research paper titled “A Theory of Human Motivation”.
He proposed a five stage model that has physiological needs at the bottom, and self-actualization at the top.
His opinion was that unless the lower level deficit needs are satisfied, an individual can’t progress to meet higher level needs.
Essentially, his model says that people work to fulfill their needs, starting with their most basic needs, and ending with self-actualization.
self-ac·tu·al·i-za-tion : to realize one's full potential
But how does Maslow’s Hierarchy relate to personal freedom, entrepreneurship, and spirituality?
Entrepreneurship as the Key to Freedom
Entrepreneurship is often perceived as risky, with uncertain outcomes and potential for failure.
However, I would argue that sticking to a traditional job is far riskier.
Being reliant on a paycheck can weaken one's independence, create a lack of skill development, and prevent the creation of anything meaningful in ones life.
This stagnation can lead to anxieties and depression, as individuals feel trapped in cycles of routine, unable to pursue their passions or build something for themselves.
The path of entrepreneurship, on the other hand, nurtures growth, creativity, and self-actualization, offering a more fulfilling and liberating way of life.
Stage 1: Becoming Your Own Boss (Physiological)
You need to make your own money.
Begin by finding a way to make money in exchange for proving value and/or solving a problem for people.
Whether selling a product or offering a service, earning your own income allows you to cover essential expenses like food, shelter, and clothing, reducing financial stress and ensuring basic survival needs are met, WITHOUT having to relay on someone else to provide for you.
This first step builds a foundation, allowing for progress to further stages.
Stage 2: Building a Sustainable Business (Safety)
As the business grows, you hire people, put systems in place, establish a long term business plan, and secure steady clients.
Which creates a sustainable business, reduces risk, and helps ensure long-term success.
Stage 3: Forming Meaningful Relationships (Love & Belonging)
As the business continues to grow, your focus shifts to people.
Forming strong relationships with your team, partners, customers, and mentors supports the need for love, community, and belonging.
Stage 4: Achieving Excellence and Recognition (Esteem)
Entrepreneurship can bring awards, recognition from peers, and acknowledgment of one's achievements from friends and family
This boosts esteem, confidence, and self-worth more than reading self help books or repeating affirmations in the mirror ever could.
Stage 5: Defining Purpose and Legacy (Self-Actualization)
At this point, you begin reflecting on the business's purpose occurs, questioning its impact on the world.
What legacy is being left behind, and how will the world be better for these contributions?
Only Half of the Equation
But entrepreneurship is only half of the equation for true personal freedom.
Because if we only focus on the material world, we are neglecting our higher selves.
And rejecting the opportunity to find real peace & joy in life.
The Other Half
Spirituality and entrepreneurship are often seen as separate, yet their synergy unlocks a life of freedom and abundance.
While entrepreneurship deals with fulfilling tangible needs and achieving worldly success, spirituality helps transcend mental barriers, illusions, and suffering.
When we combine the two, we have the most holistic approach to life.
Entrepreneurship primarily addresses the lower tiers of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
By engaging in entrepreneurial endeavors, one can secure financial stability, independence, and opportunities for growth.
This path often leads to success, recognition, and achievement, fulfilling essential needs and desires that contribute to a sense of personal accomplishment.
While entrepreneurship can provide the foundation for a secure life, spirituality offers deeper insights that help to dissolve mental and emotional blockages so you can actually ENJOY life.
These blockages manifest as illusions, suffering, and stress, which, if left unchecked, will prevent personal growth.
Spiritual practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and self-reflection, and prayer help to uncover and release these blockages, fostering inner peace, clarity, and joy.
Dedicating your work to something higher than your self is also important.
When you stop looking to see what you can get out of life - and instead work to give back, help others, alleviate suffering, and make the world a more beautiful place - the universe backs you with it’s full support and opens doors you never even imagined.
The combination of entrepreneurship and spirituality creates a harmonious blend that nurtures both external and internal well-being.
“The synergy between spirituality and entrepreneurship paves the way for a life of freedom and abundance.”
Thanks for reading!
Until next time.
Cheers,
Hunter
